The coach of Mexico, Javier Aguirre, was injured in the face by an object thrown from the stands during the match in which the Mexican national team lost 2-0 to Honduras in the first leg of the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Nations League. Despite this incident, Aguirre stated: "It's football, nothing happens," and expressed solidarity with the Hondurans affected by the tropical storm.
At the end of the match at the Francisco Morazán stadium in San Pedro Sula, with an attendance of about 20,000 fans, Aguirre was hit in the head by an object thrown from the stands. The Mexican Football Federation condemned the incident and called for a safe environment for everyone in football.
The coach of Honduras, Reinaldo Rueda, lamented what happened, expressing his sadness for Aguirre, whom he described as a human being. José Ramón Fernández, a well-known Mexican sports journalist, called the incident "unacceptable savagery, with no justification or forgiveness."
Honduras took the victory with goals from Luis Palma in this first leg, and the return match will be decided on November 19 at the Nemesio Diez in Toluca. Meanwhile, measures are expected to be taken and the person responsible for this violent act, described as a cowardly act, will be punished.
