The coach of the Mexican National Team, Javier Aguirre, was injured on the head during the Mexico vs. Honduras game at the Francisco Morazán Stadium in San Pedro Sula last Friday. The aggression against the coach called into question the safety of the stadium, where 28 years ago Honduras achieved its first home victory over Mexico by 2-0, in a match that has been recently renovated.
Aguirre was hit by a can thrown from the stands by an unidentified fan despite the presence of numerous police officers. In the past, the stadium has been the scene of disturbances involving fans who invaded the field in violent confrontations. Before the match, the Football Federation of Honduras advised fans not to bring dangerous objects, such as cans or bottles, but these drinks apparently were being sold inside the venue.
The match between Honduras and Mexico was marked by tension, with Aguirre responding to the boos by showing the middle finger to the stands. After the defeat, the coach of the Mexican National Team downplayed the incident and praised the performance of the Honduran team. The return game of the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Nations League will take place in Toluca, Mexico.
The Mexican Football Federation requested Concacaf to act according to regulations following the aggression suffered by Aguirre. The confederation condemned the attack and announced that it would investigate the case to ensure the safety of teams and fans at future events.
