Ex First Lady Ana García Seeks Presidential Candidacy

Ana García, former first lady of Honduras, is vying for the presidential candidacy of the National Party in the upcoming primary elections. Supported by her imprisoned husband, ex-president Juan Orlando Hernández, she faces stiff competition from two other women in a significant political contest set for Sunday.

The former First Lady of Honduras, Ana García, wife of the ex-president Juan Orlando Hernández, sentenced for drug trafficking in the U.S., will participate in the National Party's primary elections seeking the presidential candidacy. Other two women lawyers from the country's major parties will also participate in these elections.

Ana García leads the Avanza Movement of the National Party, which alternates power with the Liberal Party in Honduran politics. She will compete with three other contenders in the National Party's primary elections. Despite her husband's legal situation, García has stated that he is innocent and hopes for his prompt release.

In her campaign closing, García shared a message sent by her husband from prison, asking for votes for her. On the other hand, the previous elections of the National Party were surrounded by accusations of fraud and corruption, which could affect her chances in the upcoming general elections.

In the Libre party, the favorite is Rixi Moncada, the current Minister of Defense, supported by former President Manuel Zelaya. In the Liberal Party, Maribel Espinoza will compete with other candidates. These three women aim to succeed Xiomara Castro, the first president of Honduras.

The primary elections will be held this Sunday, and more than half of the ten million inhabitants of Honduras are eligible to vote. The general elections will take place on November 30.
