President of Honduras Xiomara Castro has stated that a 'coup' is being planned against her government. Based on verified intelligence, she reported that former President Juan Orlando Hernández, who was pardoned in the U.S., is planning to return to the country to proclaim the winner of the elections. Castro emphasized her commitment to peace, democracy, and human rights, and as president, she guarantees that the Armed Forces and National Police will investigate the incident and act immediately in accordance with the law. She has called on social movements, collectives, and citizens to urgently and peacefully gather in Tegucigalpa to defend the popular mandate and reject any coup attempts. These statements came after the National Police dispersed a peaceful demonstration by Libre party supporters at the National Vocational Training Institute (Infop), where all election materials are stored. The results of the November 30th elections are still unknown. Preliminary results show the leading candidate, conservative Nasry 'Tito' Asfura, in the first place.
