US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met privately on Monday with Honduras' president-elect, Nasry 'Tito' Asfura, where they agreed to 'deepen' the relationship between the two countries to promote the region's common objectives, mainly on security issues, amidst Honduran President Xiomara Castro's request for a full vote recount.

According to the State Department, Rubio congratulated Asfura on his victory in the November 30 elections, which went through an electoral process marked by fraud allegations and took more than 24 days to confirm the new governor.

During the meeting, Rubio reportedly highlighted the need to 'deepen' the relationship and detailed that they will seek to continue cooperation on security, maintaining the bilateral extradition treaty and expanding information sharing.
