President of Honduras warns of a coup plot

Honduran President Xiomara Castro reports a coup plot by former President Juan Orlando Hernández, who allegedly plans to return to proclaim election winner. Hernández denies the accusations.

President of Honduras warns of a coup plot

The president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, stated on Tuesday that a 'coup' is being plotted against her government. She alleged that former President Juan Orlando Hernández is planning to re-enter the country to proclaim the winner of the November 30 elections.

'To the Honduran people: I report with historical responsibility that, based on verified intelligence information, Juan Orlando Hernández, pardoned in the U.S., is planning to enter the country to proclaim the winner of the elections while an aggression is underway to break the constitutional and democratic order through a coup against my government,' Castro said in a message on the social network X.

Hernández calls the 'coup' accusation 'false'

In turn, former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández described the president's accusation on Tuesday as 'false,' denying that he plans to return to the country after being pardoned by U.S. President Donald Trump. His term ends in January.

'To the Honduran people, the accusation launched by President Xiomara Castro is completely false. There is no plan to enter the country or attempt to break the constitutional order,' stated Hernández (2014-2022) on the social network X.

Castro's accusation 'only seeks to sow panic, divert attention and generate chaos, a known practice of LIBRE leaders' (Liberty and Refoundation Party, left-wing, in power), Hernández said. On November 27 last year, he was pardoned by Trump after more than three years in a New York prison, where in 2024 he was sentenced to 45 years for drug trafficking and weapons.
