Panama and four other countries call to protect elections in Honduras. Panama, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica, forming the Alliance for Development in Democracy (ADD), have called to preserve the integrity of the general elections held on November 30 in Honduras. They also urge defeated candidates to accept the results for social peace and democratic governance. In a new statement, the ADD fully supports the immediate, responsible, and professional actions of Honduran state institutions to guarantee citizen security, public trust, and respect for the popular will expressed at the polls. The Alliance reminded that one of the fundamental values of democracy is the responsible attitude of those who, not favored by the popular vote, accept electoral results and contribute to respect for institutionalism and democratic governance. Likewise, it reiterated its solidarity with the Honduran people and its commitment to democracy, legality, and peace. It also urged international observers from the OAS and the European Union to remain vigilant until the vote count is finalized. The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Honduras began this Thursday a special scrutiny of at least 2,792 ballots with inconsistencies, a process that could be decisive in defining the elected president.
